About the index

Making Africa’s air connections visible.

The Africa Air Connectivity Index maps how easily African countries connect to one another by air.

What the Index does

For each of the 55 African Union countries, the Index brings together selected measures of air connectivity and presents them as a score from 0 to 100 and a published rank.

  • It makes differences in air networks easier to see.
  • It provides a common starting point for discussion and further research.
  • It gives each country a profile with relevant airlines, airports and routes where records are available.
  • It creates a consistent structure that can be refined as better data becomes available.

A public research initiative

The Africa Air Connectivity Index is an independent initiative of Aviation Africa, a platform covering African aviation, mobility and the policy choices that shape the continent’s skies.

It is not an official index of the African Union, AFCAC, AFRAA, IATA, ICAO, OAG, Cirium or any airline. The Index does not claim to replace official statistics, commercial aviation databases or regulator records.

Its purpose is to make a complex subject more accessible, encourage better public data and support informed conversations about the future of African aviation.

Our approach

We publish the edition, snapshot date, source notes and methodology alongside the results. Missing information is left blank where appropriate; a zero is used only when a zero is supported by the available evidence. Published rankings are preserved as an edition record rather than silently rewritten when new information appears.

As the Index develops, we welcome corrections, better sources and constructive scrutiny from airlines, airports, regulators, researchers and travellers.

Mapping Africa’s connections. Measuring its progress.

Better connections are not only about more flights. They are about shortening distance, widening opportunity and making continental movement work for more Africans.
